4 New Year’s Resolutions for Better Health

Most of us make at least one New Year’s resolution at this time of year, but sometimes we set vague or overly difficult goals. When we set our sights on losing a large amount of weight or giving up a favorite food forever, it’s no wonder that we tend to give up on our goals by March.

But if you focus on small changes that are easy to incorporate into your daily life, you can build new habits and enjoy better health in the long term. More importantly, you’ll stick with it for years to come.

These four New Year’s resolutions are some of the most important things you can do for your health, and the good news is that they’re easy, too!

Go for a daily walk. Don’t stress yourself with setting difficult mileage or time goals. Just get out and go for a walk every day, enjoy some sunshine, and invite a friend to go along for company. When you enjoy a new habit, you’re more likely to stick with it, and even do it longer or more often.

Drink more water. The vast majority of us simply do not drink enough water, and it affects digestion, appetite, weight, and so much more. Purchase a refillable bottle and aim to drink a reasonable volume of water each day (about 64 ounces is right for most people).

Eat more leafy greens. Leafy greens are good for digestion and carry a number of important nutrients, but most people don’t eat enough of them. Just add a delicious salad to one meal per day, and you’re already doing something great for your health.

Improve your flexibility. Improving flexibility is one of the simplest ways to prevent injuries and pain. Join a yoga class or simply invent a stretching routine that you can perform in your living room a few times per week. Look for guidance on YouTube or another streaming platform if you prefer the feel of a class.

And of course, remember to schedule your annual physical with your primary care physician. He or she can discuss preventive screenings and offer nutrition and wellness advice to help you stay in tip-top shape.
